Digging up dirt on Michelle

Michelle Guzel is an Australian children’s author, book collector and fossil enthusiast.

Fascinated by stories locked in rocks, she studied geology, palaeontology and zoology, and spent many years tracking the global travels of microscopic fossils called ostracods, in a time when people were nowhere to be seen, dinosaurs ruled, and continents were on the move.

Michelle lives in Victoria with her husband, an endearingly bossy Scottie called Millie, and a library full of stories, old and new.

Michelle used a microscope to find this tiny ostracod fossil (1.2 mm long). It was hiding in a pile of sand grains.
Michelle didn’t need a microscope to find this dinosaur footprint. It was way too big to miss. (Photo taken by Kemal Guzel)
